History of Antiquity I (9–12): This is the first of three courses that will cover several classic works of history from antiquity. In this first trimester students will read The Codes of Hammurabi and Moses, Deuteronomy, Samuel-Kings, and Herodotus’ The Histories.

The object of this course is to understand the relationship of Law and History in the ancient world. The “Law” of Moses – the Torah – consists of five books which mostly recount history. The Code of Hammurabi has a religious introduction and conclusion. Samuel-Kings has often been described as “Deuteronomic History.” Herodotus, sometimes called “the Father of History,” is also quite interested in the laws and customs of various nations.

The final grade will be based on class participation, completion of study questions, an exam, and an essay.

2nd Trimester
History of Antiquity II (9–12):
This is the second of three courses that will cover several classic works of history from antiquity. In this second trimester students will read Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, Seneca, and Plutarch.

The object of this course is to understand the development of Greek and Roman thought – which undergirds the western intellectual and political tradition.

The final grade will be based on class participation, completion of study questions, an exam and an essay. To facilitate class discussion, the following editions will be required:

3rd Trimester
History of Antiquity III (9–12):
This is the third of three courses that will cover several classic works of history from antiquity. In this third trimester students will read the Gospel of Luke, Acts, Eusebius’s Ecclesiastical History, Athanasius’s On the Incarnation, Gregory of Nyssa’s Treatise on Religious Instruction, and Augustine’s City of God.

The object of this course is to understand the foundations of Christian faith and practice in the early church.

The final grade will be based on class participation, completion of study questions, an exam, and an essay. To facilitate class discussion, the following editions will be required:
