First Trimester – Writing about Literature: Introduction to Fiction

Students will read, discuss, analyze and write about classic short stories and one novel by significant authors. Emphasis will be placed on the elements of literature, literary devices, and simple enjoyment of the works. There will be a variety of responsive writing assignments, both creative and expository. Grading will be based on participation in class discussion, completing study guides and responsive writing, as well as a final trimester test or oral presentation. All short story readings will be available through the internet.

Second Trimester – Writing about Literature: Narrative Poetry of the Middle Ages 

Students will read, discuss, analyze and write about Beowulf, Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, and Dante’s Inferno. Emphasis will be placed on the elements of literature, literary devices, and simple enjoyment of the works. There will be a variety of responsive writing assignments, both creative and expository. Grading will be based on participation in class discussion, completing study guides and responsive writing, as well as a final trimester test or oral presentation. 

The recommended editions are: 

Third Trimester  – Writing about Literature: Literature of the Reformation Era

Students will read, discuss, analyze and write about literature of or concerning the Reformation Era. Emphasis will be placed on the cultural setting of the time, major figures, analysis of elements of literature and literary devices. There will be a variety of responsive writing assignments. Grading will be based on participation in class discussion, completing study guides and responsive writing, as well as a final trimester test and oral presentation. 

The reading list will include: 

  • Luther’s 95 Theses; selections from Foxe’s Book of Martyrs and The Westminster Confession of Faith, Pilgrim’s Progress, Bunyan, Huguenot Garden, Jones
