Elementary Literature / 3-5 / Period 3 / KK / T1,2,3

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to classic and important children’s literature and to inspire them to understand and love it. In the first trimester, we will be reading Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry, Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White, and The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. Note that these links lead to Amazon, but the books can be purchased anywhere. Students will learn and apply basic literature terms (characters, setting, plot, theme), as well as vocabulary from the stories.  There will be discussion, small projects, informal oral quizzes, and one short formal essay each trimester to demonstrate learning. There will be reading and writing homework each week, and the class will be informally graded through a progress report. Parent help with reading and homework may be needed.
