Middle School Literature / 6-8 / Period 1 / KK / T1 – T2 – T3

The first trimester of Middle School Literature will cover three stories of young people facing the world. We will read, The Giver by Lois Lowry, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, and The Yearling by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. This course aims to improve students’ reading comprehension and processing of “big ideas,” while also helping them to effectively put their ideas about our texts into writing. Students will continue to dive deeper into understanding and application of literature terms (characters, setting, plot, theme). Learning will be facilitated by weekly assignments, which may include quizzes, study questions, and written reflections. Grades will be given based upon in-class participation, completion of preparatory assignments, and one to two larger writing assignments. (This course will be offered with an A- and a B-track to help accommodate the different levels of experience with literature of the students. A-track will cater toward 6th graders by offering shorter assignments, while the B-track will provide greater opportunities for writing and reflection for older students.) Please order the versions of the works indicated below so that we can all be “on the same page” for our in-class discussions. It is completely fine to purchased used copies of the versions listed.
