Introduction to Portraiture
Scope and Sequence:
In this course students will learn the basic canon of the human face, from infancy to adult, with an introduction to the canon of the human body. Students will begin this course by creating their own “map” of the human face, otherwise known as the canon of the human head. Students will then spend time focusing on each specific feature of the human face, such as the eyes, ears, nose, mouth, etc. They will then study each of these features from a different angle. Finally, students will have the opportunity to either complete a self-portrait or the portrait of a family member of friend, demonstrating all of the combined concepts learned throughout this course. Throughout this course, students will use both graphite and charcoal on a variety of surfaces as they gain the foundational skills used in creating life like portraits of all ages and from many angles.
