Music / Grades 5-12 / Period 2 / RP / 1T-2T-3T
Concert Band (5–12)
In this class students will learn the basics of playing a band instrument (brass, percussion, or woodwind), and will develop the skills to read and play music in an ensemble. No prior instrumental experience is needed; however, students who have played an instrument before are welcome to participate. This class will be graded only for those students in grades 9–12. The homework for this class will be to practice one’s instrument at least 20 minutes every day (M–F). Minimal homework may be given to reinforce music theory necessary for reading music. There will be periodic playing quizzes and tests that all of the students will be graded on. This class will perform at the annual open house in April.
Students must provide their own instrument and lesson book. The lesson book we will be using is Standard of Excellence Comprehensive Band Method, Book 1. Here is an example of the book you should order (please order the book appropriate for your instrument; you can also purchase one from Quinlan and Fabish, or check with the teacher to ensure you are purchasing the correct book): https://www.amazon.com/PW21TP-Standard-Excellence-Enhanced-Trumpet/dp/0849707595
Sometime in the summer, we will be holding an instrument test day where representatives from Quinlan and Fabish (the local music store) will be available to help students decide on an instrument and rent one. I highly recommend renting an instrument from Quinlan and Fabish if you don’t already own one. There are a lot of low-quality instruments available; and renting one from the music store will ensure that your child has a good quality instrument to play.
