Description
Math / Grades 7-12 / Period 5 / SG / 1T-2T-3T
Pre-Algebra/Algebra 1
This combined class consists of a 3-trimester course of Pre-Algebra designed for advanced middle school or early high school students preparing for Algebra I and a 3-trimester course of Algebra for 9th-11th grade students. Students may enroll in this course for up to two years, with one year in each level.
The Pre-Algebra course emphasizes foundational math skills, including operations with negative numbers, exponents, roots, and radicals. Students will explore algebraic properties, equations, polynomials, ratios, and geometric concepts such as surface area, volume, and the Pythagorean Theorem. Real-world applications are also covered, including time, temperature, and measurement conversions.
The Algebra course builds a strong foundation in algebraic thinking through solving equations, inequalities, and absolute value problems. Students will explore linear functions, graphing, and writing equations, as well as systems of equations and their real-world applications. The course also covers exponents, polynomials, factoring, and quadratics—including graphing and solving using various methods. Additional topics include radical and exponential expressions, arithmetic sequences, and data analysis.
I’ve worked hard to keep costs down by using a curriculum I created myself. It’s a blend of several strong resources that I’ve found to be the most effective for my students over the years. There won’t be a required textbook; instead, I’ll deliver the lectures, and students will take notes during class. A small portion of the class grade will be based on their note-taking—graded solely on the act of taking notes—to help ensure they are focused and engaged during the lecture. On some weeks, additional notes with more detailed explanations will be provided for students to take home. I’ll also email the lecture notes to both students and parents for reference and review as needed.
