First Trimester High School Literature: Writing about Literature: The Ancients

Students will read, discuss, analyze and write about the oldest stories known to man, including the Book of Genesis and the Epic of Gilgamesh. There will be writing instruction, including responsible use of internet resources, and the editing and revision process. Grading will be based on participation in class discussion, completing study guides, writing assignments, as well as a final trimester test or oral presentation.

Required texts: Genesis, The Epic of Gilgamesh (ISBN-13 978-0140441000)

Second Trimester High School Literature: Writing about LIterature: The Greeks Students will read, discuss, analyze and write about Homer’s Odyssey and Sophocles’ Antigone, and selections from Plato’s Republic. Emphasis will be placed on writing about and thoughtful enjoyment of the works. Grading will be based on participation in class discussion, completing study guides and responsive writing, as well as a final written test or oral presentation.

Third Trimester High School Literature: Writing about Literature: The Roman Era

Students will read, discuss, analyze and write about selections from Plutarch’s Lives, (available online) and St. Augustine’s Confessions. There will be a research paper, and a first-person presentation on a figure from Lives. Grading will be based on reading quizzes, participation in class discussions,, the research paper, and oral presentation.

Required text: The Confessions (ISBN-13 978-1565481541)
